Favicon

What is a favicon?

Favicon is the little icon you often see in the browser title - it depends on which browser you have, of course.

The favicon was originally introduced back in 1999, but it wasn't until around 2003, 2004 that it was supported by more browsers and then website owners really started to implement it.

The favicon was originally a 16x16 pixel image that had to be uploaded to the website root and specified in the code in the head section of the page.

Later on, it took hold. The favicon could come in several formats and sizes and even animated favicons. Of course, animated favicons took over and were horrible to look at, so thankfully most browsers no longer support this feature.

In 2019, Google also started displaying a page's favicon in the SERP next to each result. This change caused people to start posting a favicon in earnest.

How to make a favicon

In the old days, it was a bit of a hassle because the favicon had to come in an .ico format. Today it's easier. There are online favicon generators like this one. If you use it, just upload a square image and you'll be served favicons and the code to put on your page.

More about Favicon

Fortunately, there isn't a lot of science about Favicons, so what you need to know is very limited.

We would always encourage you to have a favicon on your online shop.
