CNAME
What is a CNAME?
A CNAME (Canonical Name) record is a DNS record that lets a domain point to another domain name. Instead of pointing directly to an IP address (like an A record), a CNAME points to a domain that itself has an A record.
CNAME in practice
CNAMEs are often used for subdomains. For example, www.minshop.dk can have a CNAME pointing to minshop.dk. The advantage is that if the IP address changes, you only need to update the A record in one place.
Note: A CNAME cannot be used on the root domain (apex domain). The root domain (e.g. minshop.dk without www) requires an A record or an ALIAS record.
