Acquirer
An acquirer is the bank or financial institution that handles card transactions for an online shop. The acquirer receives the payment from the customer's card issuer and transfers the money to the online shop.
What is an acquirer?
An acquirer is an intermediary between your online shop and the customer's bank. When a customer pays by card, your payment gateway sends the transaction to the acquirer, who communicates with the customer's card issuer (e.g. Visa or Mastercard) to authorize the payment.
Examples of acquirers
The most common acquirers for Danish online shops are Clearhaus, Nets (Teller) and Bambora. You set up an agreement directly with the acquirer, which typically charges a fee per transaction.
Acquirer vs. payment gateway
A payment gateway (e.g. QuickPay, Stripe or OnPay) is the technical connection between your online shop and the acquirer. The gateway handles the technical part, while the acquirer handles the financial part of the transaction.
