Omnichannel

Omnichannel is a strategy where you provide a cohesive customer experience across all sales and communication channels - webshop, physical store, social media, email and customer service.

What is omnichannel?

Omnichannel is a customer-centric approach in which all your channels work together as a single, cohesive system. Customers should have the same experience and the same options, whether they’re shopping in your online store, at your physical store, via Instagram, or contacting customer service. Data and context follow the customer across all channels.

Omnichannel vs. multichannel

  • Multichannel: You’re present on multiple channels, but they operate independently. Your online store, physical store, and email are separate silos, each with its own inventory status, customer data, and experience.
  • Omnichannel: All channels are integrated. The customer can start a purchase online, pick it up in-store, return it by mail, and you have a complete overview throughout the entire process.

Omnichannel in Practice

Examples of omnichannel experiences:

  • Click & Collect: The customer orders online and picks up in-store.
  • Unified customer profile: The customer’s purchase history, wish list, and loyalty points are available across all channels.
  • Unified inventory: Inventory status is synchronized—the customer can see whether an item is in stock online and in-store.
  • Flexible returns: Purchased online, returned in-store—or vice versa.
  • Consistent communication: Emails, text messages, push notifications, and social media coordinate messaging.

Benefits of omnichannel

  • Better customer experience: Customers choose how they want to shop and experience no friction when switching channels.
  • Higher customer loyalty: A cohesive experience builds stronger customer relationships.
  • More touchpoints: The more channels a customer interacts with, the higher the likelihood of a purchase.
  • Better data: Consolidated customer data provides deeper insights and opportunities for personalization.
  • Increased sales: Customers who shop across multiple channels typically buy more than those who use only one channel.

Challenges

  • Technical integration: All systems (online store, POS, ERP, email, inventory) must communicate with each other.
  • Data synchronization: Inventory, prices, and customer data must be consistent in real time.
  • Organizational: Requires teams to work across channels rather than in silos.
  • Investment: Omnichannel requires investments in technology and processes.

Omnichannel for Online Stores

Even without a physical store, you can adopt an omnichannel approach. Integrate your online store with social media (Instagram Shopping, Facebook Shop), email marketing, customer service (chat, phone), and any marketplaces. Make sure the customer has a consistent experience, no matter where they encounter your brand.
