Above the fold
Above the fold is the part of a web page that is visible without scrolling. It's the first thing the user sees and it's crucial for grabbing attention and keeping visitors on your webshop.
What is above the fold?
The term originates from the newspaper industry, where the most important story was placed above the fold of the newspaper (where the physical newspaper was folded in the newsstand). In a digital context, above the fold refers to the content that is visible on the screen before the user scrolls down.
Why is above the fold important?
Studies show that users form an opinion about a website within 0.05-3 seconds. The content displayed above the fold is a major determinant:
- Whether the user stays or bounces: If above-the-fold content doesn't capture interest, many users will leave the site immediately.
- The user's perception of your brand: The first visual impression shapes trust in your webshop.
- Actionability: Clear above-the-fold CTAs increase the likelihood of conversion.
Above the fold on online shop pages
Front page
- Clear value proposition: What are you selling and why should the customer choose you?
- Hero banner: A strong image or slideshow that presents your key products or offers.
- Navigation: Clear menu and search bar so the user can quickly find what they are looking for.
- Trustmarks: E-label, Trustpilot rating or shipping information visible.
Product pages
- Product image: A large, clear image of the product.
- Title and price: Product name and price should be immediately visible.
- Buy button: "Add to cart" or "Buy now" above the fold - especially on desktop.
- Important attributes: Size, color, stock status.
Category pages
- Filtering: Possibility to narrow down the selection.
- First products: The first 4-8 products should be visible.
- Category description: Short intro to the category (but the detailed text can be below the fold for SEO).
Above the fold on mobile
Mobile has significantly less screen space above the fold. This means:
- Prioritize even harder - only the most important things should be shown.
- Header and navigation should be compact (hamburger menu, sticky header).
- Avoid large images that fill the entire screen and push products down.
- CTA buttons should be visible and easy to hit with your finger.
Above the fold and SEO
Google assesses whether above the fold content is relevant and useful. Too much advertising or thin above the fold content can negatively affect rankings. Place your most important content at the top and ensure a fast load time so that it appears instantly.
