What is Billy?

Billy is an accounting program designed for small businesses and self-employed individuals who want to handle their own bookkeeping. Billy is now part of Shine and has been renamed Shine Accounting, but many people still know it as Billy. According to Shine, it is used by over 30,000 businesses. Integrations with other systems, such as an online store, use Billy’s API, which requires a Plus or Complete subscription.

Invoices, Items, and Cash Book

An invoice in Billy is created for a customer, and once it’s approved, the sale and sales tax are posted. A credit memo credits all or part of an invoice and is linked to it. Each line item on an invoice represents a product, and it is the product that determines which account in the chart of accounts the sale is posted to. Entries that do not originate from a Billy invoice—such as a sale with the online store’s own invoice as a supporting document—are recorded in the cash book.

Billy and Shoporama

With Shoporama’s free Billy app, your online store orders are converted into invoices in Billy or into financial entries in the cash book with the online store’s own invoice attached. Sales tax, shipping, discounts, and payments are posted to the accounts you select, and credit memos are linked to the original invoice.
