Business Central
Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is Microsoft's ERP system for small and medium-sized businesses and the successor to Dynamics NAV, which many people know as Navision. It combines accounting, sales, purchasing, and inventory into a single system.
What is Business Central?
Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is an ERP system—that is, a business system that integrates finance, sales, purchasing, inventory, and often also production and projects into a single program. It is designed for small and medium-sized businesses and is typically used by companies that have outgrown a basic accounting program. Business Central is available both as a cloud-based version from Microsoft, called Business Central Online, and as an on-premises solution, where the company runs it itself. Many companies have it set up and customized by a Business Central partner.
From Navision to Business Central
Business Central is the successor to Navision, which was developed in Denmark and acquired by Microsoft in 2002. The program was later renamed Microsoft Dynamics NAV, and in 2018, its successor, Dynamics 365 Business Central, was released. Many people still refer to it as Navision or NAV, but older Navision and NAV installations are not the same as Business Central Online.
Sales Invoice, Sales Order, and Customer
A customer is a client in Business Central. A sales order is an order that is fulfilled and invoiced in Business Central, while a sales invoice immediately posts the sale, the sales tax, and the customer’s receivable. A sales credit memo credits all or part of an invoice. Which accounts and which VAT rates a sale is posted to are controlled by posting groups on the customer and on the line items, and payments from customers are posted to a payment journal.
Business Central and Shoporama
With Shoporama’s free Business Central app, your online store orders are converted into posted sales invoices or sales orders in Business Central Online. The customer, items, VAT, shipping, discounts, and payment are included; credit memos are converted into sales credit memos, and the online store’s own invoice can be attached as a PDF. The app connects to your Microsoft account and is set up under Microsoft Entra apps in Business Central. Read how to set it up in the Business Central app guide, or see Business Central Integration and Web Store with Business Central. If you’d like to compare it with e-conomic, Dinero, Uniconta, and Billy, see Accounting Software.
