Chargeback fee

If a person's credit card is stolen and the card is used for purchases on your webshop, the amount will be deducted from their account.

Naturally, the person complains to their bank and the money is returned. This is a so-called chargeback.

To return the money, the acquirer will charge a fee and this fee is called a chargeback fee.

Unfortunately, the fee will land on your shoulders even if you are 100% innocent of the crime. Therefore, it feels like a very unfair fee to have to pay. Often, as a webshop owner, you've also shipped an item, so you're effectively being double-penalized financially.

Fortunately, 2-factor payments (such as 3D secure) have minimized online fraud and chargeback fees.
