Webhook
What is a webhook?
A webhook is a mechanism where a system automatically sends an HTTP POST message to a specified URL when a certain event occurs. It's a form of push notification between systems - unlike polling, where a system repeatedly asks for news.
Webhooks in e-commerce
In e-commerce, webhooks are typically used to integrate webshops with external systems. Examples:
- New order → notify warehouse system or ERP
- Payment received → update accounting system
- Order shipped → send tracking info to customer
- Stock changed → update product availability
Webhooks provide real-time integration without systems having to constantly check for changes.
