Organic traffic

Organic traffic is the visitors who find your online store through unpaid searches in Google and other search engines. It is the most valuable traffic source because it is free and driven by users with real search intent.

What is organic traffic?

Organic traffic refers to visitors who click on the unpaid (organic) search results in Google, Bing or other search engines. Unlike paid traffic (Google Ads, paid social), each click doesn't cost anything directly - but it requires investment in SEO to achieve good rankings.

Organic vs. paid traffic

  • Organic: Free per click, but requires ongoing SEO work. Results come over time and last.
  • Paid: Instant traffic, but stops when you stop paying. Costs per click.

Most successful webshops use a combination: paid traffic for quick results and organic traffic as a long-term foundation.

Benefits of organic traffic

  • Free per click: You don't pay for each visit, which means better margins over time.
  • Higher credibility: Many users trust organic results more than ads.
  • Lasting impact: Good content and strong SEO drive traffic for months and years to come.
  • High purchase intent: Users who actively search are often closer to a purchase than users who see an ad.
  • Scalable: Once you rank well, you can receive thousands of visits daily at no extra cost.

How to increase organic traffic

Technical SEO

  • Fast load time: Google rewards fast pages. Optimize images, use caching and minimize scripts.
  • Mobile-friendly: Google uses mobile-first indexing - your mobile page is the one that counts.
  • Proper structure: Use semantic HTML, canonical tags, XML sitemap and schema markup.

Content: Content

  • Keyword research: Find out what your potential customers are searching for and create content that matches.
  • Product descriptions: Write unique, detailed descriptions - not copy from the supplier.
  • Blog posts and guides: Capture traffic from informational searches ("How to choose...").
  • Category descriptions: Add relevant text to your category pages.

Link building

  • Quality links: Links from relevant, trustworthy sites strengthen your authority.
  • Internal linking: Link between related products, categories and articles on your own site.

Measuring organic traffic

Organic traffic is typically measured in Google Analytics (GA4) under Acquisition > Traffic acquisition. Important metrics to follow:

  • Number of sessions: How many visits you get from organic search.
  • Landing pages: Which pages attract the most organic traffic.
  • Conversion rate: How many of the organic visitors buy.
  • Keywords: In Google Search Console you can see which keywords are driving traffic.
