SFTP
What is SFTP?
SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol) is a secure protocol for transferring files over a network. Unlike regular FTP, all communication is encrypted, which protects data from eavesdropping. SFTP runs over SSH (port 22).
SFTP in e-commerce
SFTP is used in e-commerce for automated data exchange with partners and systems:
- Product feeds to price comparison sites
- Order exports to warehouse or ERP systems
- Stock updates from suppliers
- Invoices and credit notes to accounting systems
SFTP is the preferred alternative to FTP because it is secure by default and does not require additional certificates like FTPS.
