SSL certificate
A Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate encrypts the connection between the customer's browser and your webshop so that data such as payment information and personal data cannot be intercepted. It is a requirement for all webshops.
What is an SSL certificate?
SSL (and the newer version TLS - Transport Layer Security) is an encryption technology that ensures that data sent between the customer's browser and your online store is encrypted and cannot be read by third parties. When an SSL certificate is installed, your URL changes from http:// to https:// and the browser displays a padlock in the address bar.
Why is SSL important for webshops?
- Protects customer data: Credit card details, passwords and personal data are encrypted during transfer.
- Customer trust: The padlock and "https" signal that your shop is secure. Browsers actively warn if SSL is missing.
- SEO factor: Google has confirmed that HTTPS is a ranking factor. Sites with SSL rank better than sites without.
- PCI DSS requirements: If you handle payment card data, PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) requires encryption via SSL/TLS.
- GDPR requirements: GDPR requires "appropriate technical measures" to protect personal data - SSL is one of the most basic.
Types of SSL certificates
- DV (Domain Validated): Verifies that you own the domain. Fastest to issue and cheapest. Sufficient for most online shops.
- OV (Organization Validated): Also verifies company identity. Provides extra trust for larger companies.
- EV (Extended Validation): The most comprehensive verification. Previously shown with a green address bar, but modern browsers no longer show it visually different from DV/OV.
- Wildcard: Covers all subdomains (*.dinshop.dk). Useful if you have multiple subdomains.
Let's Encrypt
Let's Encrypt is a free, automated certificate authority (CA) that issues DV certificates. It has become the standard for most online stores and hosting providers as it is automatically renewed every 90 days and costs nothing.
What happens without SSL?
- Browsers display a "Not Secure" warning in the address bar, scaring customers away.
- Chrome, Firefox and Safari block or warn against forms (login, checkout) on HTTP pages.
- Google deprioritizes HTTP pages in search results.
- Payment gateways require HTTPS - you can't set up payment at all without SSL.
SSL in Shoporama
All Shoporama webshops have an automatic SSL certificate included. It is set up automatically when the shop is created and is continuously renewed without you having to do anything. Your online store always runs on HTTPS with a valid certificate.
