The Theme Store: Find and Buy a New Theme
Here's how to use the Theme Store in Shoporama: browse themes, view details and demos, purchase or subscribe, activate the theme, update versions, and cancel a subscription.
The Theme Store is the section of Shoporama where you’ll find ready-made designs developed by Shoporama’s partners. Instead of spending weeks and a development budget on a design from scratch, you can find a theme, view the demo, purchase it, activate it, and go live with a new look the same day. Here’s the complete guide: how to browse, what information is available for each theme, how the three payment models work, how to cancel, and what happens to your current setup when you switch themes.
How to Find the Theme Store
You’ll find it under Store, Design, Theme Store. At the top is the heading “Theme Store” and the text “Find and buy professional themes developed by our partners.”
The page displays the available themes as cards, with the newest ones first. There is neither a search field nor filters, so you’ll need to scroll through the list. If there are no themes, it will say “No themes are available at the moment.” This is because a partner can choose to make a theme available only to select online stores—for example, if it was created as a custom project.
What does a theme card show?
- Screenshots that you can browse using the arrows on the sides or the dots at the bottom.
- A label in the top right corner showing the payment model: Free, One-time payment, or Subscription.
- Name, short description, developer’s name, and number of versions.
- The price in a gray box. For subscriptions, the monthly price is displayed, and any setup fee is listed above as “Setup.”
- The “View Demo” and “View Details” buttons. If you’ve already purchased the theme, the card gets a green border and the “Purchased” label, and the button is labeled “View Details (Purchased).”
- The date of the latest update at the bottom of the card.
Check the details before you buy
If you click “View Details,” you’ll be taken to the theme’s own page. This is the page you should spend a few minutes reviewing before making your decision. You’ll see an image gallery with thumbnails—which you can also browse using the arrow keys—a description from the developer, and a “Versions ” table with columns for “Version,” “Change Log,” and “Released.” The latest version is marked “Current.” Here you can quickly see whether the theme is being maintained or if nothing has happened in two years.
On the right-hand side is the “Price” box with the purchase button, and below that is the “Developer” box with the developer’s name and email address, as well as the dates “Theme Created ” and “Last Updated.” Note the message at the bottom: "All support regarding this theme should be directed to the developer via the email address above." The themes are created and maintained by partners, not by Shoporama, so questions about the design itself should be directed to the developer. Shoporama’s support team assists with the platform aspects related to the theme.
The Three Payment Models
The developer determines how the theme is sold, and you can see this both on the theme card and in the Price box. Prices in the Theme Store do not include sales tax. Sales tax is added when the invoice is generated.
Free
The “Price” box says “Free,” and the button is labeled “Install Free Theme.” Neither an invoice nor a recurring payment will be created.
One-time payment
A single amount is displayed along with the text “One-time payment,” and the button is labeled “Buy Theme.” Upon purchase, an invoice is generated immediately, with a line item labeled “Partner Theme,” the theme’s name, and “(One-time purchase).” You pay the full amount, not a prorated portion of the month. After that, the theme is yours, and you won’t receive any more invoices for it.
Subscription
A monthly price is listed followed by “kr. / month,” and the button is labeled “Start Subscription.” Some subscription themes also have a setup fee, which appears at the top of the Price box as “Setup,” possibly with a brief note from the developer explaining what the fee covers.
- If there is a setup fee, it will be billed immediately on a separate invoice, with the line “Partner Theme,” the theme’s name, and “(Setup Fee).”
- The monthly price appears on your regular, ongoing Shoporama invoice as a line item with the theme’s name and the text “(theme subscription).” This means you don’t have to keep track of a separate subscription.
- You’ll only be billed for subscriptions that are still active when the invoice is generated.
An important benefit: the monthly price is locked in at the rate that was in effect when you started the subscription. If the developer raises the price later, you’ll continue to pay your original price. The new price applies only to those who sign up after that.
You can find all invoices from Shoporama under Account, Company, Invoices. See Find Your Invoice from Shoporama.
How to Purchase a Theme
- Go to Store, Design, Theme Store, and click “View Details” on the theme you want.
- Click “View Demo” and try out the theme in your browser first. There’s no free trial in the Theme Store, so the demo is your test run.
- Click the purchase button: “Buy Theme,” “Start Subscription,” or “Install Free Theme,” depending on the payment model.
- Confirm in the dialog box that asks if you’re sure.
- You’ll be redirected to the “Select Theme” page under Store, Design, Theme. The theme is now registered as purchased along with its latest version.
Note that a purchase alone does not change your store’s design. Your store will look exactly the same as before until you activate the theme. This is intentional, so you can purchase it in advance and switch when you’re ready.
How to activate the theme
From the theme’s page in the Theme Store: the purchase button has now been replaced by a gray button labeled “Already purchased,” and below it is the “Use this theme” button. If the theme has more than one version, the “Select version” dropdown menu will appear first.
From Store, Design, Theme: your purchased themes are located in the “Purchased Themes” section. Each theme has a toggle you can enable: “Activate this theme.” Once enabled, two additional options appear: the toggle “Automatically update when new versions are available” and a drop-down list of versions. Remember to click “Save” at the bottom, and note that the text won’t change to “Theme is active” until you’ve saved.
If you save a theme change here, the store’s cache is automatically cleared, and visitors will briefly see a page with the text “We’re updating your store. This usually takes about a minute." If the change doesn’t take effect immediately after clicking "Use this theme," go to Store, Design, Theme, and click "Save."
What happens to your current setup?
This is the most frequently asked question when someone is considering switching themes. The short answer is: your data isn’t affected by the theme change. The slightly longer answer:
- Products, categories, landing pages, menus, orders, customers, and discount codes are stored in the online store, not in the theme. Everything will still be there after a change.
- Theme settings are saved on the online store field by field, but each theme defines its own fields. The new theme therefore has its own settings that you’ll need to fill out, such as the logo, colors, and front page boxes. Values from the old theme don’t disappear—they’re just not used.
- Texts. When you activate a purchased theme, the theme’s own translations are automatically imported under Design, Texts. Only empty fields are filled in, so any texts you’ve edited yourself will never be overwritten. See Translate and customize texts in your online store.
- Your own CSS under Design > Stylesheet remains in your online store and won’t be deleted, but it was written for the old theme’s HTML and likely won’t work well with the new one. Expect to have to clean it up. See Custom Stylesheet (Custom CSS).
- Pages built in the Page Builder won’t disappear, but will be displayed using the new theme’s components and styles.
- A theme under “My Themes” takes precedence over a purchased theme. If you’ve had a custom design created that’s still selected in the drop-down list, you won’t see your new purchased theme. Set “My Themes” to “- Select Theme -” first.
A tip: Switch themes when there are few visitors, and set aside an hour afterward to go through the Theme Settings and review the homepage, a category page, a product page, and the entire process from the cart to checkout on both mobile and desktop.
Updates and Versions
- Automatic. If you enable “Automatically update when new versions are available,” your store will be updated to the new version when it’s released, and you’ll receive an email with the subject “Theme automatically updated,” which shows the old version, the new version, and the changelog.
- Manual. If automatic updates are turned off, you’ll instead receive an email with the subject “New version available” and can switch versions yourself whenever it’s convenient for you.
- Reverting to a Previous Version. The drop-down list contains all versions of the theme, not just the latest one. If an update is causing issues, simply select the previous version and save.
How to cancel a theme subscription
The “Cancel Subscription” button is located at the bottom of the Pricing box on the theme’s page in the Theme Store, and it only appears if you have an active subscription to that specific theme. You’ll be asked to confirm before the cancellation is processed. When you cancel:
- The subscription is marked as canceled immediately.
- If the theme was the active design, it will be deactivated immediately, and the store will revert to the theme selected under “Free Themes” or “Custom Themes.” The confirmation message mentions the next billing cycle, but the deactivation takes effect immediately. Therefore, make sure you have another theme ready that looks good.
- The theme will disappear from the “Purchased Themes” list under Design > Theme.
- You will not be billed for future months.
If you change your mind, simply go back to the theme’s page. It will now say “Your subscription has been canceled” and display the “Reactivate subscription” button. The subscription will restart with the next payment one month from now. Any setup fee will only be charged again if you didn’t pay a setup fee when you first started the subscription.
For the tech-savvy
Shoporama selects themes in a specific order: a private theme under “My Themes” takes priority, followed by an active theme from the Theme Store, and finally the free default theme you’ve selected. This explains why a purchased theme won’t take effect if a custom theme is still selected.
Each version of a purchased theme is a separate copy of the theme’s files. This means you can switch back and forth between versions without losing anything. The files are maintained by the developer, so you make your own customizations through Theme Settings and your own stylesheet. If you need to make changes to the templates themselves, you must coordinate this with the developer; otherwise, your changes will be overwritten during the next update. If you’d rather use one of Shoporama’s free standard designs, you can view them in “What themes are available on Shoporama?”.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I cancel my purchase if I don’t like the theme after I’ve bought it?
There is no “Cancel” button and no trial period in the Theme Store. You can switch back to your old theme immediately under Design > Theme, but the purchase is final. Therefore, be sure to thoroughly review the “View Demo” and the image gallery first, and contact the developer at the email address listed in the Developer field if you have any questions.
Are the prices in the Theme Store inclusive or exclusive of VAT?
Excluding VAT. VAT is added when the invoice is generated. One-time purchases and setup fees are billed immediately on a separate invoice, while the monthly subscription appears as a line item on your regular Shoporama invoice. All invoices are located under Account, Company, Invoices and can be downloaded from there for bookkeeping.
I have multiple online stores. Does a single purchase cover them all?
No. A purchase is registered for the online store you’re currently in when you make the purchase. If you want to use the same theme in multiple stores, you must purchase it for each store individually. Switch stores at the top of the admin panel, go to the Theme Store, and make your purchase there. This applies to both one-time purchases and subscriptions.
How can I see which theme my store is currently using?
Go to Store, Design, Theme. The active theme is marked with a green label that says “Active,” and an active purchased theme also has a blue border around the card. If you see a purchased theme marked as active but the shop looks the same as before, check the “Custom Themes” dropdown menu at the top. It takes precedence over purchased themes.
What happens to a one-time purchase theme if I stop using it?
Nothing. The purchase is yours. The theme remains under “Purchased Themes” in Design > Theme, and you can reactivate it at any time without paying again. You won’t receive any more invoices for a one-time purchase, regardless of whether you use the theme or not.
Will I lose my SEO texts when I switch themes?
No. Product descriptions, category descriptions, landing pages, page titles, and meta descriptions are part of your online store’s content and will carry over. The theme determines how the content is displayed, not what it says. However, be sure to check your most important pages after the switch, as a new theme may format headings and image sizes differently.
Can I roll back if an update breaks something?
Yes. All versions of the theme are listed in the drop-down menu, both on the theme’s page in the Theme Store and under Design > Theme. Select the version that worked and click Save. Also, consider turning off automatic updates so you can control when you update, and notify the developer about the issue.
Who should I contact if there’s a problem with the theme?
If the issue concerns the design itself, a bug in the theme, or a change you’d like to see, email the developer at the address listed in the Developer field. If the issue involves Shoporama in relation to the theme—such as billing, a purchase that isn’t going through, or the theme not activating—please email support@shoporama.dk.
There are no themes in the Theme Store for my store. What should I do?
If you see the message “No themes are available at this time,” it means there are no published themes that your shop has access to right now, as some themes are only made available to select online stores. If a developer has promised you a theme, ask them to grant your store access.
