Exit intent pop-up

Exit intents are a way to retain users who are on their way out

Many of your users will leave your site without buying anything or signing up for your newsletter. You can convert some of them into email sign-ups or customers by grabbing them just before they leave. You can do this with an exit intent pop-up.

Exit means "leave" and "intent" means "intention" - so an exit intent pop-up is a pop-up that only appears when the user shows intention to leave your site. This is typically when they move their mouse out of the window - meaning they are about to close the tab or type something new in the address bar.

Here you can use the JavaScript programming language to detect that the mouse is on dangerous ground and present the user with a pop-up. You can offer a free shipping code, offer your help or ask if they want to sign up for the newsletter. By then the user is on their way out, so just do something.

Unfortunately, exit intent pop-ups can also be too much, so you might consider limiting it to just your check out flow.

You can see an exit intent in action here.
