Google Analytics tracking of your online store
Guide to setting up Google Analytics 4 (GA4) with e-commerce tracking via Google Tag Manager on your Shoporama webshop.
Overview of Google Analytics
Google Analytics 4 (GA4) gives you insights into how visitors use your online store - from product views to completed purchases. This guide shows you how to set up GA4 with e-commerce tracking on your Shoporama online store.
Step 1: Create a GA4 property
- Go to analytics.google.com and log in
- Click Admin (cog) → Create property
- Follow the wizard and select Web as platform
- Enter your webshop URL and a name
- Note down your Measurement ID (starts with G-)
Step 2: Set up Google Tag Manager
We recommend using Google Tag Manager (GTM) to manage your tracking codes. This gives you full control over what is tracked.
- Create an account at tagmanager.google.com
- Create a new container for your online shop (type: Web)
- Write down your GTM Container ID (starts with GTM-)
Step 3: Add GTM in Shoporama
- Go to Settings → Tracking in your Shoporama administration
- Paste your GTM Container ID in the Google Tag Manager field
- Save the settings
Shoporama automatically inserts the GTM code on all pages and sends e-commerce events to dataLayer.
Step 4: Create GA4 tag in GTM
- In GTM, click Tags → New
- Select Google Analytics: GA4 Configuration
- Insert your Measurement ID (G-XXXXXXX)
- Set the trigger to All Pages
- Save and publish the container
E-commerce tracking
Shoporama automatically sends e-commerce events to dataLayer for GTM to forward to GA4:
- view_item - when a customer views a product
- add_to_cart - when a product is added to the cart
- begin_checkout - when checkout is started
- purchase - when a purchase is completed
To enable e-commerce tracking in GA4, create a new tag in GTM of type Google Analytics: GA4 Event for each event, or use the recommended setup with a single GA4 Configuration tag and "Send e-commerce data" enabled.
Alternative: Direct GA4 integration
If you don't want to use GTM, you can also insert your GA4 Measurement ID directly under Settings → Tracking → Google Analytics. This method is simpler but offers less flexibility than GTM.
Consent Mode
Shoporama supports Google Consent Mode v2. When the built-in cookie consent solution is enabled, consent signals are automatically sent to Google so that tracking only happens when the user has given consent. Read more about Consent Mode v2.
